Where did the CapnoBase signals come from?

The in-vivo data set was recorded at one of our partner hospitals. We intentionally do not disclose the origin to maximize anonymity for the individual cases.

Do you have ethics approval? Do I need ethics approval?

Every scientific intervention involving human subjects needs to undergo review by a research ethics board to ensure that ethical standards are met and the rights of individuals participating to the study are met. Before publishing data in the CapnoBase, we ask for proof that the recording of this data was in accordance with these standards. In particular, we ensure that the data is fully anonymized.
The CapnoBase server does not contain any patient information.

Why do you have a simulated data set?

Some particular respiratory events are very rare and are difficult to obtain in the operating room. Computer models allow us to simulate these events. By simulating these rare events, we know exactly what the underlying state of the (virtual) patient is. This allows us to link particular patterns in the signal with changes in the patient state that would not be possible with real data.

Who is contributing to CapnoBase?

All researchers and students working with respiratory signals are invited to contribute to CapnoBase. For more information visit Contribute. To find out who has already collaborated with CapnoBase, visit Supporters.

Who does the annotation of the physiological data in your database?

We ensure that at least two independent experts annotate and validate the data. The experts are volunteer anesthesiologists with many years of experience.

In what formats are the signals available?

We provide the data as compressed matlab data files (.mat). This is a proprietary format and requires the MatlabTM software from Mathworks. The data is also available as comma separated ASCII files (.csv). For more details on the data structure please review the help section on data formats.

How can I keep track of changes in the database or when new data sets become available?

We publish updates when changes on CapnoBase become available. For your convenience, there is a RSS feed of the updates. There is also a RSS feed for tracking comments on the cases if you are interested into a particular case.

Our research group wants to use the CapnoBase data sets. Do we have to pay for it?

CapnoBase data and research tools are free to use for students and researchers. We simply ask that you cite the CapnoBase reference appropriately. You need to register on our website in order to download the CapnoBase data sets.

I think there is a labeling error in one of the cases. What can I do?

Labeling physiological data is very difficult and time consuming. Sometimes the labeling of difficult cases is subjective and the result may vary between experts. If you do not agree with a label, you can leave a comment on the details page of the corresponding case. This allows you to discuss the case with researchers around the world.

What is a capnogram?

A time capnogram is the measurement of carbon-dioxide (CO2) concentration in the exhaled and inhaled gas flow and its plot over time. CO2 concentration can also be potted versus flow, or more commonly, volume of the exhaled gases. To learn more about capnograms, visit capnogram.org, watch this educational video, or read some of our selected publications.
